“Alhamdulillah. Our efforts under the leadership of Honorable Chief Adviser have finally seen success. The remaining 24 people who were imprisoned at various times for participating in the July uprising in the United Arab Emirates are being released soon,” he wrote.
Dr Nazrul thanked officials of Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Bangladesh Embassy in the UAE for their cooperation.
He noted that earlier, in September last year, all 188 prisoners initially detained had been released following the direct request of the Chief Adviser.
In the first phase of arrests related to the protests, a total of 57 individuals were detained. Of them, the UAE court sentenced three to life imprisonment, 53 to 10 years and one to 11 years.
On August 28 last year, the Chief Adviser had spoken by telephone with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, requesting commutation of the sentences.
The UAE government responded positively, leading to the release of the expatriates, who began returning home from the first week of September.
