BNP leader Fazlur Rahman has submitted a written unconditional apology to the International Crimes Tribunal over his critical remarks, the tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press briefing at the tribunal premises, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said, “Fazlur Rahman has sought unconditional forgiveness from the International Crimes Tribunal. A hearing on this matter is scheduled for December 8. He has admitted that his statements were made in error.”

Fazlur Rahman was earlier summoned by the tribunal on November 30 for contempt of court. Tribunal-1 had issued a rule asking why action should not be taken against him for his adverse comments regarding the tribunal.

He was instructed to appear in person on December 8 and bring all his educational certificates along with his Bar Council lawyer certificate.

According to prosecution, during a television talk show on November 26, Fazlur Rahman stated that he did not recognize the tribunal, arguing that it was set up solely to try 1971 war crimes and cannot conduct other trials.

Despite knowing the potential consequences, he continued to make statements about political parties, the tribunal’s formation and its proceedings, which were seen as deliberate contempt of court.
