Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday presented three new proposals to the Election Commission (EC) while expressing no objection to the timely announcement of national election schedule.
A three-member BNP delegation, led by Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, met Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at EC headquarters in Dhaka’s Agargaon. The nearly 90-minute meeting focused on election preparations and related proposals.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Nazrul said the party does not support postponing the election unless unavoidable circumstances arise.
“Therefore, BNP has no objection if the EC declares the poll schedule within its stipulated timeline,” he added.
On concerns about party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health affecting the election, he said, “We expect she will recover soon and be able to participate in election-related activities.”
Regarding Tarique Rahman’s voter status, he noted, “He is a Bangladeshi citizen. There is no barrier to his enrolment. The Commission can register him anytime.”
The BNP proposals include increasing the number of polling booths, marking stations and ballot seals to accommodate the rise in voters and additional national referendum to be held alongside the 13th parliamentary election.
The EC is expected to respond by Sunday.
The party also urged the EC to allow expatriate Bangladeshis without National ID cards to register using passports, with verification as needed.
To ensure election transparency, BNP reiterated that ballot papers must continue to be printed only at government facilities, insisting that no private institutions handle printing.
Other members of the delegation included Ismail Jabiuallah, former secretary and member of BNP’s EC-related committee and Md Zakaria, former election commissioner and party’s EC committee member.
