The Election Commission (EC), led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, is scheduled to meet the President on December 10 ahead of the official announcement of schedule for the 13th parliamentary election and the accompanying referendum.
A senior Election Commissioner confirmed the plan on Thursday, adding that the Commission will hold a meeting on 7 December to finalise the timetable.
The EC has indicated that the schedule is expected to be released in the second week of December, with the general election and referendum likely to take place in the first half of February.
“The schedule may be announced a day or two after the meeting,” the Commissioner said, noting that, as per convention, the timetable is finalised in consultation with the President before its official release.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud confirmed that the latest amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) have been approved and that all preparations for the elections have been completed.
Meanwhile, the registration process for two new political parties is also nearing completion.
Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar added that the decision on the timing of the schedule will be made during the December 7 meeting and finalised following consultation with the President.He noted that the schedule could be announced any day in the week after the meeting.
