Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin on Sunday emphasized that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and Thailand could significantly enhance bilateral trade and investment, particularly by strengthening maritime and logistics connectivity.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Thai Ambassador to Bangladesh, Thitiporn Chirasawadi, at his office.
The adviser highlighted the need to expand existing trade relations and make better use of sea routes to boost cooperation between the two countries.
Bashir also noted that Bangladesh offers a favourable investment climate for foreign investors.
He encouraged Thai businesses to explore opportunities in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, shrimp, furniture and tourism, adding that such investments would benefit both nations.
Reiterating the importance of maritime connectivity, the adviser said that an FTA would help increase bilateral trade volume and foster stronger economic ties.
The Thai envoy stressed the potential of launching a direct maritime trade route between Ranong Port in Thailand and Chittagong Port in Bangladesh.
She explained that the western sea route could reduce shipping time and costs significantly, cutting the current 14–15 days for shipments from Thailand to Bangladesh to just 4–7 days. The route would also allow faster shipments from Chittagong to Thai and neighbouring ports.
Additional Secretary (Export) Md Abdur Rahim Khan and Minister Counsellor of Thai Embassy were also present at the meeting.
