The Election Commission (EC) will meet President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban on Wednesday, with the appointment set for 12:30pm, the President’s Office said Monday.

The Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, will brief the president ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament Election and the referendum.

Meanwhile, the EC directed Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar to record the CEC’s address to the nation on Wednesday. In a letter sent to the state broadcasters on Monday, the EC said the CEC’s speech—delivered on the occasion of the 13th National Parliament Election and the referendum—will be aired simultaneously on BTV and Betar. BTV has been instructed to keep a recording team ready to reach the EC Secretariat as soon as the schedule was confirmed and to take necessary measures to broadcast the address at the designated time.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon that the CEC’s speech will be recorded on Wednesday. “Now he (CEC) will decide the content and time of the record,” he said. Asked about the contents of the address, he said, “I have no idea about the content of the recording of the CEC’s speech and when it will be done. You are asking whether the speech will be recorded on December 10, I say yes. But sir (CEC) knows what the content is and when it will be done.”

On the Commission’s meeting with the president, the secretary said he had not yet been informed of the time but expected the announcement soon. He also outlined the procedures for postal ballots, saying eligible voters must register within 15 days of the election schedule announcement. Postal ballots will then be sent to designated addresses. Members of the police, army, and Ansar—who may be deployed for five to seven days—will register later, while government employees and those in legal custody must register within the 15-day window.

Following the 10th Commission meeting on Sunday at Nirbachan Bhaban, Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullahtold reporters that the schedule for the national election and referendum would be announced very soon. “We have some work as per our tradition in the pre-scheduled activities. We the entire commission will meet the President. Letters will be sent to Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television tomorrow to record the speech of the Chief Election Commissioner. Our pre-scheduled activities have already been completed,” he said.
