Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called on Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) to make the upcoming national elections “historic and memorable,” describing the polls as a rare chance to build a new Bangladesh.
“This election must be made historic and memorable through a fair and flawless arrangement,” he said while addressing UNOs nationwide via videoconference from the State Guest House Jamuna.
Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and senior Cabinet Division officials also joined the virtual briefing, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
Prof Yunus said the nation is standing at a crucial crossroads. “History has given us a new opportunity. Other generations may not get this chance. If we can use it, we will build a new Bangladesh. If we fail, the nation will stumble.”
Referring to past elections, he remarked, “We have seen elections before. Any sane person would say that the elections held under the last regime were not elections but fraud.”
He stressed that the forthcoming polls carry a responsibility unlike any other. “If we perform this responsibility properly, the polling day itself will be historic for the people.”
Highlighting the vital role of UNOs, the Chief Adviser said the government’s success depends significantly on their sincerity and commitment. “If you perform your responsibilities properly, the government will succeed in fulfilling its own.”
Prof Yunus underscored the importance of both the national election and the planned referendum. “The election is for the next five years, but the referendum is for a hundred years,” he said, noting that the referendum could permanently shape the foundation of a new Bangladesh.
Addressing newly appointed UNOs, he emphasized that their foremost duty is to ensure a peaceful and festive election environment. He urged them to visit all polling stations, engage with local stakeholders and prepare thoroughly for smooth operations.
He also called for heightened voter awareness regarding the referendum, urging officials to help people make informed decisions—whether they choose to vote “yes” or “no.”
Comparing officials to midwives, he said, “If the midwife is good, the babies born will also be good,” stressing the importance of skill, care, and integrity in their roles.
Prof Yunus instructed officers to respond creatively to emerging challenges and take proactive steps to counter misinformation and rumours.
He further emphasized the need to prioritize women’s participation by ensuring they can safely and easily reach polling stations.
With the election schedule set to be announced soon, he urged UNOs to begin detailed planning immediately. “From now on, prepare and plan exactly what you will do, how you will do it, and when.”
Chief Adviser’s Principal Secretary M Siraz Uddin Miah, Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Public Administration Secretary Md Ehsanul Hoque, and other senior officials were present during the event.
