Mobile phone traders in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar staged a road blockade at the Circus Fountain area on Wednesday, demanding reforms in National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR), an end to monopolistic syndicate practices and the opening of mobile phone imports.
The protest, which began around 5:40 PM, caused severe traffic disruption as traders gathered wood and bamboo on the road and set them on fire while chanting slogans.
There were also reports of vehicles being vandalized during the demonstration. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohammad Akkas Ali of Tejgaon zone confirmed that the road blockade completely halted traffic in the area, creating major inconvenience for commuters.
