German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Rüdiger Lotz announced on Wednesday that seven German nationals will join the long-term European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) for Bangladesh, with additional German observers arriving closer to polling day.
Speaking to reporters at the German Embassy, Lotz said the EU is deploying a “large mission” for the upcoming national election and Germany will contribute “a significant number” of observers across different phases of the process.
He said the long-term observers will arrive in January, while “many more” short-term observers will join during the election period.“I think it is very important to have this kind of international support,” he added.
Emphasising the need for calm ahead of the vote, the ambassador said, “All parties must refrain from violence in the political process. A peaceful environment is a basic requirement for free and fair elections.”
Lotz reaffirmed Germany’s support for Bangladesh’s electoral process through the EU mission and welcomed the interim government’s stated pledge to hold credible polls.
Responding to a question, he clarified that German observers will operate exclusively under the EU delegation.
“There will be no separate German mission; all German observers will work within the EU EOM framework,” he said.
