Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age and president of the Editors’ Council, was harassed in front of The Daily Star office near Farmgate in Dhaka early Friday.

Kabir was rescued by law enforcement officials and army personnel stationed in the area to maintain law and order. They intervened and escorted the senior journalist to safety at The Daily Star office.

The incident occurred after Kabir arrived at the site in response to reports of attacks on the offices of two prominent newspapers.

‘I came here as president of the Editors’ Council, and I thought it was my moral responsibility to stand by my fellow journalists at The Daily Star, after hearing reports of attacks on the newspaper office,’ Kabir said.

He added that New Age had condemned the heinous attack on Sharif Osman Hadi and demanded a proper investigation and assurance of justice.

However, he expressed concern that a group of people attacked the two newspaper offices before any investigation had been conducted.

He also noted that such incidents could have an adverse impact on the country’s global image.

The demonstrators took to the streets late Thursday night following the announcement of the death of July uprising leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who had been wounded by gunfire and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.

The protesters also targeted the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. During the protests, they vandalised and set fire to the buildings of both newspapers.
