Detectives have arrested nine more people in connection with the attacks, vandalism, arson and looting at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area, police said on Tuesday.
The arrests were made by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB), DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman told reporters on Tuesday morning.
With the latest arrests, the total number of people detained in the case has risen to 28. Earlier, police had arrested 19 suspects and identified at least 31 individuals in connection with the attacks.
Two separate cases have been filed at Tejgaon police station over the incidents involving vandalism, looting and arson at the offices of the two newspapers. In one case, 500 unnamed individuals have been accused, while the other case names 400 unidentified suspects.
Following the attacks, security has been strengthened for the editors of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, with gunmen deployed to ensure their safety.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further arrests may be made as efforts continue to identify and apprehend all those involved in the violence.
