Former Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das has expressed hope that the return of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to Dhaka will help restore political stability in Bangladesh.
She shared her views in a reaction given to Indian news agency ANI on Thursday. Riva said she believes Tarique Rahman’s return is politically very significant.
“He has been away for a long time, and since Khaleda Zia herself has been ill, he managed the party quite effectively,” she said.
She further noted that immediately after the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government, Tarique was seen consolidating the party’s political support.
“Although he was doing this online and through various new technologies, he was still able to keep the party under his direct leadership,” she added.
Referring to the current situation in the country, the former Indian envoy said that at a time when Bangladesh is experiencing widespread violence and is literally divided along different ideological lines, Tarique’s return is expected to bring a degree of political stability. “He may be able to consolidate the moderate forces within Bangladesh,” she observed.
