Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) reigning stars Rajshahi Warriors opened their 2025-26 campaign with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Sylhet Titans in the tournament’s first match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Titans Opener Saim Ayub (28 off 15) provided brisk initial momentum with clean striking before falling in the fifth over. Rony Talukdar anchored the middle overs with a measured 41 runs off 34 balls, helping Sylhet rebuild after early wickets.
The defining knock for Sylhet came in the final overs from Parvez Hossain Emon, who finished unbeaten on 65 off 33 deliveries, striking four fours and five sixes in a blistering cameo that lifted the total into the 190s. Afif Hossain also contributed a quick-fire 33 at a strike rate north of 170, giving Sylhet crucial late runs.
For Rajshahi, Sandeep Lamichhane was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 38, while Tanzim Hasan Sakib grabbed one scalp in an otherwise expensive bowling effort.
Chasing a target of 191, the Warriors suffered an early setback when Tanzid Hasan fell cheaply, and the score slipped to 43 for 2 inside the powerplay.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who seized control of the innings with a composed yet aggressive century. Shanto reached his hundred off 58 balls, finishing unbeaten on 101 from 60 deliveries with 10 fours and five sixes, anchoring the chase with authority.
Shanto shared an unbroken 130-run partnership with veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, who also impressed with a fluent 51 not out off 31 balls, lacing his innings with crisp timing and calculated aggression. Their stand ensured Rajshahi reached 192 for 2 with two balls to spare, sealing a confident victory in the very first match of the season.
The result provided Warriors with a morale-boosting start, while Sylhet will rue missed chances with the ball despite posting a challenging total. Shanto’s century earned him the Player of the Match award, underlining his importance to Rajshahi’s title aspirations this season.
