The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has expressed deep sorrow at the death of former prime minister, BNP Chairperson and veteran political leader Begum Khaleda Zia.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr SM A Faiz, on behalf of the commission’s members, officials and staff, conveyed condolences following her passing on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. Begum Khaleda Zia, the country’s first woman Prime Minister, died aged 80, prompting widespread mourning across the nation.
In a condolence message today, Professor Dr Faiz described Begum Khaleda Zia as a resolute and courageous leader who guided the people of Bangladesh in the struggle to establish democratic rights. He said she would remain an enduring source of inspiration for the younger generation, while her death marked an irreparable loss for the nation and created a profound void in the country’s political landscape.
The UGC Chairman prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Recalling her contributions to higher education, the UGC noted that during her tenure Begum Khaleda Zia proposed the introduction of the ‘Prime Minister’s Gold Medal’ through the commission to recognise outstanding academic achievements of meritorious public university students at the undergraduate level.
Several key higher education institutions were also established during her time in office, including the National University, Bangladesh Open University, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and Jagannath University, alongside a number of public and private universities. These institutions, the UGC said, continue to play a significant role in expanding higher education across the country.
Her notable contributions to the promotion of women’s education, the commission added, will be remembered by the nation with lasting respect and gratitude.
Begum Khaleda Zia, a three-time prime minister and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), passed away in Dhaka on early Tuesday.
