The namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayers) of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will be held on Wednesday (31 December) after Zuhr prayers at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
The Office of the Chief Adviser said on Tuesday night that all necessary preparations for the janaza have been completed.
To ensure the burial is completed smoothly, only designated individuals will be allowed to enter Zia Udyan. Public movement in the area will remain restricted until the burial is completed.
People flock to Manik Mia Avenue from morning
From early morning, a large number of mourners have been gathering at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital to take part in the janaza of uncompromising leader, former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
People are rushing in from different parts of the country. Grief is visible on people’s faces as they mourn the loss of an uncompromising national leader.
Sri Lanka’s FM Herath set to arrive in Dhaka to attend Khaleda Zia’s funeral
Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka, is set to arrive in Dhaka today to attend the namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayers) of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
He is expected to arrive in Dhaka at 1.00pm, according to Dharmapala Weerakkody, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh.
Khaleda Zia at her own residence for last time
A mortuary van wrapped with the national flag carrying the body of BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, widely regarded as an uncompromising leader for democracy in Bangladesh, reached her residence Firoza with state protocol around 09:15 am.
The mortuary van left the Evercare Hospital here at 8:53 am for her residence as members of law enforcement agencies were deployed on both sides of the streets from the hospital to her residence.
Vehicular movement restricted for Khaleda Zia’s janaza: ISPR
Vehicular movement has remained restricted since 8am on Wednesday in several areas of Dhaka for the state funeral rites of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Traffic restrictions are in place around College Gate intersection (Residential Model College), IDB Bhaban intersection and Bijoy Sarani, the ISPR said on Wednesday morning.
However, pedestrian movement remained open to the public, with the authorities urging people to plan their travel accordingly.
27 BGB platoons deployed ahead of Khaleda Zia’s janaza, burial
The funeral prayers of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will take place after Zuhr on Wednesday, 31 December, at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
The Chief Adviser’s Office said on Tuesday night that authorities have completed all preparations for the janaza.
To ensure the smooth conduct of the prayers and maintain tight security, authorities have deployed 27 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) across Manik Mia Avenue and other key areas of Dhaka.
BGB Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam confirmed the deployment, saying the force has strengthened overall security around the janaza and burial programme.
He said BGB has stationed 27 platoons at strategic locations, including Evercare Hospital, the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban area and Zia Udyan, as part of a comprehensive security arrangement.

In a Facebook post, the Office of the Chief Adviser said that during the janaza, Khaleda Zia’s coffin will be placed at the western end of Manik Mia Avenue instead of the South Plaza of the National Parliament.
