An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was felt in Sylhet and several other parts of the country early on Monday (5 January).
The tremor occurred at around 4:47am and lasted for several seconds, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in some areas.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Dhing area of India’s Assam state, at a depth of 35 kilometres beneath the ground.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Sylhet had experienced similar seismic activity last month. On 10 December last year, two earthquakes were felt within a span of five minutes during the early hours of the day. The first tremor struck at 2:20:31am, followed by a second at 2:25:14am.
