Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Wednesday met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at the party’s Gulshan office and expressed China’s willingness to cooperate with the next elected government of Bangladesh.
The meeting lasted about an hour and marked the first interaction between the Chinese envoy and Tarique Rahman.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Joint Secretary General Humayun Kabir, Acting Chairman’s Adviser Mahdi Amin and Press Secretary Saleh Shibly were also present.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BNP Joint Secretary General Humayun Kabir described the discussion as cordial. Tarique Rahman emphasized China’s role as a key development partner for Bangladesh and shared the party’s plans for the country’s future development.
“They discussed how China can further support Bangladesh’s development,” Humayun said.
The Chinese envoy reportedly expressed readiness to engage with the next elected government and acknowledged Tarique Rahman’s leadership potential, expressing hope that he would guide the country as its next Prime Minister.
Humayun also said Ambassador Yao personally extended condolences over the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “At the start of the meeting, the Ambassador conveyed condolences on behalf of China.” he added.
