Dhaka University’s highest policy-making body, the Syndicate, has recommended the permanent expulsion of four pro-Awami League teachers for allegedly opposing students during the July mass uprising.

The accused teachers have been served show-cause notices and asked to submit written explanations within a week.

University sources said the authorities will take a final decision if the replies are found unsatisfactory.

Confirming the development on Thursday, DU Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed said the Syndicate took the decision based on specific allegations against the teachers.

“The syndicate meeting decided to take action against the four teachers based on the allegations. They will be issued show-cause notices, and further action will be taken after reviewing their replies,” he said.

The teachers are Prof Sadeka Halim, Prof Zinat Huda, Prof AKM Jamal Uddin and Prof Md Mashiur Rahman.

According to university administration sources, the charges include taking a stand against the student movement during the July uprising, cooperating with the then administration to suppress the movement, and making several controversial statements and engaging in disputed activities.

The sources further said the show-cause notices will clearly mention why the teachers should not be expelled from the university. If they fail to provide satisfactory explanations within the stipulated timeframe, the authorities may proceed with their permanent expulsion.
