Former Bangladesh Army chief General (retd) Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan is set to testify before the International Crimes Tribunal in a case filed against dismissed Major General Ziaul Ahsan over allegations of enforced disappearances and killings, which have been brought as crimes against humanity.
Tribunal prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the matter.
Thursday was scheduled for the defence to present its arguments on whether formal charges would be framed in the case against Ziaul Ahsan.
Following this, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam presented his submissions before the tribunal.
During his argument, the chief prosecutor read out a statement previously given by former army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan to the tribunal’s investigation agency.
Prosecutor Tamim said that the chief prosecutor quoted from the former army chief’s deposition submitted to the investigation agency and confirmed that Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan would physically appear before the tribunal to testify in the case.
Ziaul Ahsan is the sole accused in the case.
The tribunal is scheduled to deliver its order on 14 January on whether formal charges will be framed.
Earlier on 17 December, the prosecution submitted formal charges against Ziaul Ahsan, bringing three counts related to the abduction and killing of more than a hundred people.
