BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called an emergency meeting of the party’s Standing Committee to be held on Friday night.

BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain confirmed to BSS that the meeting will take place at BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan at 9:30 PM, with Tarique Rahman presiding.

A senior party leader said the meeting was not part of the regular schedule and would have no fixed agenda.

However, the leader noted that the meeting is significant, as Tarique Rahman may be formally elected as the Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30 last year and the nation has been observing a period of mourning since her death.

With the New Year underway and the national election approaching, members of the party’s highest policymaking body, National Standing Committee, have advised Tarique Rahman to assume the post of BNP Chairman in full capacity.

Earlier, on January 4, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists in Sylhet that Tarique Rahman would be elected as the party’s Chairman within a day or two.

Tarique Rahman has been serving as BNP Acting Chairman since 2018, following the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
