New US ambassador arrives in Dhaka

Newly appointed United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen arrived in Dhaka on Monday evening.

Officials of the US Embassy in Dhaka and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the new ambassador and his wife, Deanne Dao, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

“It is an honor for me to serve the United States as the 19th Ambassador to Bangladesh. I look forward to strengthening the ties between our two countries to advance peace and prosperity in the region,” the US Embassy in Dhaka said in a Facebook post, quoting Christensen.

“My wife and I are thrilled to return to a country that holds many fond memories for us,” he added.
According to diplomatic sources, Christensen is scheduled to meet Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Protocol Wing’s Chief of Protocol Md Nural Islam over the next two days.

He is expected to present his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Thursday, marking the official start of his tenure as the United States ambassador to Bangladesh.
The newly appointed US ambassador, Christensen, was sworn in at the US State Department on 9 January.
A senior US foreign service officer, Christensen previously served as counselor for political and economic affairs at the US Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021, according to the US State Department.
