Rajshahi, Chattogram and Sylhet secure BPL play-off spots

Rajshahi Warriors, Chattogram Royals and Sylhet Titans all booked their places in the Bashundhara Cement Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) play-offs after Rajshahi’s seven-wicket win over Dhaka Capitals in the final match of the Sylhet phase on Monday.

Abdul Gaffar Saqlain took 4-24 as Dhaka were restricted to 131 all out, while Tanzid Hasan’s 76 off 43 balls guided Rajshahi to victory with 23 deliveries to spare at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.The result lifted Rajshahi to the top of the points table and also confirmed play-off qualification for Sylhet and Chattogram.

Dhaka elected to bat first and made a brisk start through Usman Khan, who struck 41 off 27 balls with five fours and two sixes in a 54-run opening stand with Abdullah Al Mamun.

However, Saqlain broke the partnership and triggered a collapse as Dhaka lost three quick wickets and managed only 51 runs during the middle overs.

Nasir Hossain made 24 and Sabbir Rahman 14, but Dhaka lost five wickets in the death overs, including a hat-trick by Ripon Mondol in the final over.

Ripon removed Sabbir, Ziaur Rahman and Taijul Islam with the last three balls of the innings to complete the third hat-trick of the season, after Mehedi Hasan Rana and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury.

Md Rubel supported Saqlain with 2-22.

In reply, Rajshahi made a fast start through Muhammad Waseem’s 22 off 13 before Tanzid took control of the chase.

The left-hander reached his fifty in 29 balls and finished with seven fours and five sixes. Mushfiqur Rahim (12 not out) and James Neesham (14 not out) took Rajshahi home in 16.1 overs.

The tournament moves to Dhaka for the final league phase starting on 15 January.
