BNP candidate for Cumilla-10 Abdul Gofur Bhuiyan on Sunday lost his candidacy following the hearing of an appeal petition by the Election Commission.
The Commission was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon.
Although the returning officer had earlier declared Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan’s nomination papers valid, an appeal was filed against him over allegations of dual citizenship.
After hearing the appeal, the commission ruled to cancel his candidacy.Earlier the same day, the commission also cancelled the candidacy of BNP-nominated candidate Sarwar Alamgir from the Chattogram-2 constituency.
An appeal against Sarwar Alamgir was filed by Jamaat candidate Md Nurul Amin on allegations of loan default.
Following the hearing, the commission upheld the appeal and scrapped Sarwar Alamgir’s nomination.
The decisions were taken as part of the ongoing appeal process against returning officers’ rulings on nomination papers ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election.
