A Dhaka court has ordered to seize land worth Tk 17.5 million owned by Jahangir Alam, former personal assistant to ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina and freeze Tk 10.3 million of seven bank accounts belonging to his wife Kamrun Nahar.
The order was issued by Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Foyez on Tuesday following separate applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Assistant Director Piyas Pal told the court that there was a risk the accused might transfer or dispose of the assets during the investigation. To ensure a fair probe, the commission sought seizure of Jahangir’s immovable property and freezing of Kamrun Nahar’s movable assets, including bank deposits. The court granted both petitions after a hearing.
Earlier, on December 17, the ACC filed a case against Jahangir Alam and Kamrun Nahar, accusing them of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.
According to the case statement, Kamrun Nahar allegedly acquired Tk 68.8 million in illicit assets, an offense punishable under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004 and Section 109 of the Penal Code. Jahangir Alam is accused of illegally amassing assets worth Tk 182.9 million.
