BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday said the people of Bangladesh, who cherish freedom and democracy, had once again ensured the party’s victory, describing it as a triumph for the nation and democracy itself.

“This victory belongs to Bangladesh, to democracy, and to the people who aspire for democracy. From today, we are all free,” he said while addressing a post-election press conference at the InterContinental Dhaka.

Tarique extended his heartfelt congratulations to citizens for overcoming obstacles and paving the way for democracy in the country.

He noted that the BNP’s journey begins amid serious challenges, including a fragile economy left behind by fascism, dysfunctional constitutional and statutory institutions, and a weak law-and-order situation.

Yet, he said, after more than 15 years, the country would once again have a parliament and government accountable directly to the people.

Tarique stressed that all political forces must remain united to prevent any attempt to restore fascism or turn the country into a subordinate state. He congratulated the 51 political parties that participated in the election, including Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, NCP, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and Ganadhikar Parishad, calling their contributions to democracy “significant.”

“Political parties are the torchbearers of democracy. If the government and opposition perform their responsibilities responsibly, democracy will become institutionalised in the country,” he said, emphasising that differences in views must not override the country’s interests. “National unity is our strength, division our weakness.”

Tarique calls for unity to build ‘humane Bangladesh’

Tarique thanked citizens for their participation, ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful election, and expressed gratitude to the interim government, the Election Commission, judges, administrative and law enforcement officials, returning officers, polling officers, and domestic and international observers for their roles in the process.

Paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for democracy—from the Liberation War of 1971 to the ongoing struggle to safeguard freedom—he called for prayers for the departed leaders and reiterated respect for their contributions to establishing democratic Bangladesh.

He highlighted that the BNP had earlier presented a 31-point manifesto, incorporating inputs from other democratic parties and nationwide consultations, and had also signed the July Charter with certain reservations. He pledged that the party would implement every promise made to the people, step by step.

Acknowledging the excitement of BNP supporters and democracy-loving citizens nationwide, Tarique remembered the absence of party leader Begum Khaleda Zia, praising her steadfast struggle against fascism and authoritarianism and praying for her soul.

Calling for unity and responsibility, he urged BNP activists to continue working tirelessly to improve people’s lives and honour the trust and support shown by citizens. He also asked them to remain calm and vigilant, ensuring no post-election unrest or misuse of the situation by any “anti-democratic forces.”

Tarique stressed the importance of maintaining law and order. “Peace and security must be preserved at all costs. No illegal activity or abuse of power will be tolerated. Justice must prevail. The rule of law is essential; without it, all our efforts will be in vain. Law applies equally to every citizen, regardless of party, faith, or opinion.”

He acknowledged that minor misunderstandings may have arisen among parties or candidates during the election but appealed to all to avoid turning these into acts of revenge. Calling upon democracy-loving citizens, Tarique said the fight for democracy must now continue through controlling corruption, strengthening law and order, and ensuring accountability, while building a safe, humane, and democratic Bangladesh.

He concluded by congratulating all democratic forces, overseas Bangladeshis, and freedom-loving citizens on the electoral victory, calling for cooperation across parties and communities to establish a secure, democratic, and prosperous Bangladesh.
