National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has alleged that incidents of violence and property grabbing are taking place across Bangladesh following the announcement of the 13th National Parliamentary Election results, calling them a “serious threat to democracy”.
In a statement on Saturday, Nahid said: “By attacking dissenting voices and rival political forces in the euphoria of power, they are proving that their goal is not democratic coexistence, but creating an environment of fear.”
He claimed supporters of the eleven-party alliance and independent candidates have faced repeated attacks in various parts of the country, resulting in injuries and fatalities. According to him, these incidents are not isolated but appear to be organized displays of power aimed at establishing political dominance.
Nahid said: “The politics of occupying the field through post-election violence will not succeed. Those using the public’s mandate as a shield to instill fear are siding with history’s wrong path. Political survival is ensured not by suppressing competition but through fair and just rivalry.”
He called for an immediate cessation of violence, enforcement of the rule of law, and strengthening of democracy based on public trust and participation. “All acts of violence must stop immediately, and the perpetrators should be arrested and brought under the law. The safety of those affected must be ensured.”
Nahid warned that administrative silence, negligence, or bias could deepen the crisis and raise questions about the state’s impartiality. He further cautioned that any attempts to impose new terror and domination in post-24 February Bangladesh would be met with firm responses from students and citizens through democratic means.
