BNP unveils cabinet lineup

The newly elected government formally took shape on Tuesday as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and members of his cabinet were sworn in at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, outlining the structure and key portfolios of the administration that emerged from the 13th parliamentary election.

Tarique Rahman took oath as the country’s 11th prime minister at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, where Mohammad Shahabuddin administered the oath in the presence of senior state officials, including the chief adviser and members of the incoming cabinet.

The ceremony began shortly after 4:00 pm and marked the formal assumption of office by the new government.

Following the prime minister’s oath, cabinet ministers were sworn in first, followed by state ministers.

Among the ministers– BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was assigned the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Salahuddin Ahmed took charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs, while Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was appointed minister for Finance and Planning. Retired Major Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was given responsibility for the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku assumed charge of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. Dr AZM Zahid Hossain was appointed to oversee the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs along with Social Welfare, while technocrat Dr Khalilur Rahman was named foreign minister.

Abdul Awal Mintoo was placed in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Mizanur Rahman Minu was assigned the Ministry of Land, and Nitai Roy Chowdhury became minister for Cultural Affairs. Mohammad Asaduzzaman took responsibility for the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, while Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad was appointed minister for Religious Affairs.

Ariful Haque Chowdhury was given charge of the Ministry of Labour and Employment as well as the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment. Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir assumed responsibility for the combined Ministry of Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute. Zahid Uddin Swapan was appointed minister for Information and Broadcasting, and Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Annie took charge of the Ministry of Water Resources. Ehsanul Haque Milon was placed in charge of the Ministry of Education along with Primary and Mass Education.

Technocrat Amin ur Rashid was appointed minister overseeing the Ministry of Agriculture as well as Fisheries and Livestock and Food. Afroza Khanam assumed responsibility for the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Asadul Habib Dulu for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Zakaria Taher for the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, and Dipen Dewan for the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs. Sardar Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Bakul was named minister for Health and Family Welfare, Fakir Mahbub Anam took charge of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications along with Science and Technology, and Sheikh Rabiul Alam was assigned the combined responsibilities of Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping.

Among the state ministers, M Rashiduzzaman Millat was appointed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Anindya Islam Amit to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, and Shariful Alam to the Ministry of Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute. Shama Obaid was named state minister for Foreign Affairs, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku for Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock and Food, Barrister Kaiser Kamal for the Ministry of Land, Farhad Hossain Azad for the Ministry of Water Resources, and technocrat Aminul Haque for the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several hundred guests, including political leaders, senior civil servants, diplomats and representatives of international organizations.
With the cabinet now in place, the Tarique Rahman-led government is expected to begin policy implementation immediately, focusing on governance, economic management and post-election stability.
