Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener and opposition Chief Whip Md Nahid Islam has demanded impeachment and subsequent arrest of President Md Sahabuddin, accusing him of failing to prevent the July 2024 mass killings and of being unable to escape responsibility for the bloodshed.
Nahid Islam made the demand on Wednesday afternoon after visiting the graves of the Pilkhana massacre martyrs at Banani Military Cemetery in Dhaka.
“President Sahabuddin did not take effective measures to stop the genocide in July 2024. He cannot evade his responsibility for the mass killings,” the NCP convener said.
He called on parliament to impeach the president during its first session and demanded that Sahabuddin be arrested on charges related to the killings.
The demand adds to mounting political pressure on the president following a controversial newspaper interview in which he reportedly disclosed sensitive state matters.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar issued a separate statement accusing the president of violating his oath of office by publicly revealing internal and confidential state affairs during the interview.
“The presidency is the highest constitutional position in the country. Every statement and action by the person holding this office is of immense national importance and is bound by the oath of office and the principles of state confidentiality,” Parwar said. He accused Sahabuddin of breaching that oath and failing to protect classified state information, creating widespread public confusion, debate, and concern.
The Jamaat leader added that the president’s remarks have generated fresh controversy and uncertainty on matters concerning the constitution, the presidential oath, and constitutional continuity. “Making such statements while holding the office of president constitutes a violation of his oath, which is entirely inconsistent with the dignity and stature of the state,” he said.
