Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has warned that any agriculture officer found manipulating onion prices will be removed from service.

The warning came after an emergency meeting with all district agriculture officers at Agriculture Ministry in Secretariat, convened in response to a sudden surge in onion prices.

Jahangir Alam said the country has sufficient onion stock, but unscrupulous manipulation by certain individuals caused the recent price spike.

He noted that prices had risen by Tk 40–45 per kilogram yesterday but fell today after the government allowed limited onion imports starting December 7 to stabilize the market.

He added that identifying the culprits would be easier with media assistance.

The adviser emphasized the need to balance the interests of both farmers and consumers, stating that selling onions at Tk 70 per kilogram would serve both parties.

He also mentioned that the government is considering subsidies for potato farmers, who have been affected by a significant price drop.

On other matters, Jahangir Alam assured that there is no shortage of fertilizer in the country, while supply for tobacco farming will be controlled to discourage its cultivation.

He urged the public to remain vigilant against the use of fertilizer in cattle and fish farming, citing serious public health risks.
