Locals in Sreepur, Gazipur, on Saturday buried a 26-year-old man in a waist-deep pit after he allegedly beat his mother during a dispute over money, police said.

Khalilur Rahman, son of Nuruddin of Tepirbari (Madhyapara) village under Telihati Union, reportedly demanded money from his mother, Khodeja Begum, who refused, citing household expenses and her medical needs. During the argument, Khalil allegedly threw brick chips, injuring her near the ankle.

Sub-inspector Muhammad Abul Bashar of Sreepur Police Station said Nuruddin filed a case against his son for assault. Khalilur Rahman was later detained by police after a video of the incident circulated on social media.

Khodeja said her son has mental health issues and occasionally becomes violent if money is denied. “He might smoke bidis or marijuana with the money he gets. Sometimes he beats me if I refuse him,” she said. She added that Khalil had been seriously ill as a child and had not received continuous medical care.

After the assault, local residents and workers from nearby garment factories intervened. Khalil was tied to a post and buried in a pit beside the Green Smart Garments factory in Tepirbari, according to his father, Nuruddin. “Some relatives carried out justice. He was tied and then buried in the pit,” Nuruddin said, adding that Khalil has been living separately from the family for years.
