Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Wednesday said Bangladesh does not seek advice from neighbouring countries on its electoral process, describing recent comments from India as unacceptable.

Speaking to journalists at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Touhid Hossain said India remained silent during what he termed farcical elections held under the previous Awami League government, yet is now offering advice to the interim government as it prepares for a credible vote.

He also criticised India for allowing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to make provocative statements from its territory, both on social media and through the media.

“She has been convicted by the courts. If she tries to create instability while staying in a neighbouring country, we will certainly object and demand her return,” he said, adding that India has neither extradited her nor stopped her from making such statements.

On questions about remarks related to India’s seven sisters region, the foreign affairs adviser said Bangladesh does not support terrorism or separatism and would not allow its territory to be used to shelter any separatist group.

Responding to comments by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Liberation War, Touhid Hossain said India has consistently sought to downplay Bangladesh’s role in the 1971 war, a position he described as unacceptable.
