A Dhaka court on Wednesday acquitted 45 people, including BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, in two cases filed with Paltan and Shahjahanpur police stations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehdi Hasan passed the order, defence counsel Mahiuddin Chowdhury confirmed.
Among the acquitted are BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s adviser Aman Ullah Aman, BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, member of the Chairperson’s Advisory Council Advocate Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, former organising secretary of Jubo Dal’s central committee Ishak Sarkar, and others.
The case filed with Paltan Model Police Station in March 2013 by Sub-Inspector Mehedi Masud alleged obstruction of police duties and cocktail explosions. On 26 March that year, Paltan Police Sub-Inspector Md Aminul Islam submitted a charge sheet against 26 accused, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Another case was filed with Shahjahanpur Police Station in February 2013 by Sub-Inspector Md Ashraf Ali on similar allegations. On 20 March 2013, the investigation officer, Shahjahanpur Police Sub-Inspector Md Ruhul Amin Munshi, submitted a charge sheet against 23 accused, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy.
However, in both cases, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Barrister Moudud Ahmed were earlier discharged by the High Court.
