Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul on Thursday expressed concerns over the granting of bail to followers of fugitive Sheikh Hasina, calling it “inconsistent with legal rules” given her alleged threats against participants of the July Mass Uprising.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed at the Supreme Court, Dr. Nazrul said that Hasina, currently in India, has repeatedly threatened to kill those involved in the 2024 mass uprising.
“Granting bail to her party followers would not align with any rules of bail. Judges should consider the risk to individuals’ lives before making such decisions,” he added.
Dr. Nazrul emphasized that bail must be granted where legally entitled, but cautioned that individuals posing potential threats should not be released.
He highlighted that he has repeatedly raised these concerns with the Chief Justice, urging careful consideration in cases involving high-risk individuals.
He also expressed gratitude to Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on his last working day, acknowledging his role in implementing judicial reforms and supporting laws enacted by Law Ministry.
Dr. Nazrul noted that unusual bail grants by some High Court benches remain a concern, especially when involving individuals who could threaten leaders of the July Mass Uprising.
“The Law Ministry has no authority over the High Court, nor should it. The Chief Justice is the guardian of the judiciary and I have consistently shared my apprehensions with him,” Dr. Nazrul added.
The law adviser stressed the continued need to safeguard citizens and uphold judicial prudence in handling cases with potential threats to personal safety.
