Nahid Islam, convener of Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), has called for a Constituent Assembly election to pave the way for drafting a new constitution for Bangladesh.
He made the remarks while addressing a public rally held atthe Old Collectorate Field of Moktarpara in Netrokona on Sunday (July 27).
“We’ve launched a nationwide campaign demanding reforms and a new constitutional framework,” he said. “A Constituent Assembly election is essential—through it, the people and the revolutionary masses will decide the future constitution of Bangladesh.”

Nahid emphasized the need for systemic change, stating: “We declared that July–August would mark the beginning of a new Bangladesh. We need a fresh settlement—this country can no longer be governed by outdated laws and a broken system.

Our goal is to build a just and welfare-oriented state, where citizens receive dignity and quality services in education, healthcare, and more.”

He also made a controversial claim, saying, “Exactly one year ago, Sheikh Hasina was removed from power through sacrifice. Those responsible for mass atrocities under the Awami League must be held accountable.”

Addressing local concerns, Nahid pointed to severe shortcomings in Netrokona’s education and healthcare sectors and a lack of employment opportunities.

“We are committed to addressing these issues and ensuring a better future for the people here,” he added.
