A three-member US trade delegation will arrive in Bangladesh on a two-day visit starting on Sunday to discuss the draft of the US reciprocal tariff.

Earlier, the US administration lowered the tariff from 35% to 20% in August on Bangladeshi exports to the US market.

Talking to the Daily Sun, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said the three-member delegation would be led by Brendan Lynch, assistant United States Trade Representative (USTR) for South and Central Asia.

“We will hold a meeting with them at the secretariat at 1:30pm and discuss the draft of the US tariff. The delegation has no right to make a decision on tariff reduction. The central body of the USTR will decide on the matter. However, if it is needed, we will also visit the US to further negotiate the tariff issue,” the secretary also said.

In a recent programme, both Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin and National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman said they are further negotiating to lower the reciprocal duty on Bangladeshi goods from 20% to 15%.

After a series of talks, the US reduced the reciprocal tariff rate on products imported from Bangladesh to 20% from the previously declared 35%.

They also expected that Bangladesh could reduce further tariffs through a fruitful discussion in the coming days.
