Hundreds of students and supporters of various panels, including Islami Chhatra Shibir and the Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad-backed panels, gathered at the Election Commission area on Friday evening, demanding the declaration of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) poll results.

The students began assembling around 4:30 pm, repeatedly chanting slogans while raising allegations of attempts to sabotage the JUCSU election and expressing concern over delayed results.

Abdur Rashid Jitu, vice-president candidate from the independent panel, said a day has passed and they are still awaiting the results. He alleged that certain groups are pressuring the Election Commission.

“They don’t want students to sit in their own forum and raise demands. If any teacher dares to suspend the results, the consequences will be severe,” he added.

Mazharul Islam, general secretary candidate from the Shibir-backed panel, issued an ultimatum, warning that if vote counting is not completed and results are not announced by today, they will take a firm stance.

“Any attempt to sabotage the election will not be allowed to succeed. Anyone trying to derail the election will be resisted on this campus,” he said.

He further alleged that certain university teachers, particularly BNP supporters Nazrul Islam and Abdus Sattar, are fuelling these sabotage attempts.

However, Prof Muhammad Nazrul Islam of the Mathematics Department dismissed the allegations as baseless.

“Three of us teachers boycotted the vote yesterday evening and went home. We have not even left our homes. There is no scope for any conspiracy or pre-planned activity here,” he said.

Independent member candidate Shahadat Hossain also refuted claims of manipulation, adding, “The OMR machine doesn’t belong to any party. We believe the administration will announce the results as soon as possible.”‎

‎ Ahsan Labib, Social Welfare and Human Resource Development Secretary candidate from the Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad-backed panel, demanded that the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) results be announced by 8:00 pm tonight. He called for additional manpower to expedite the counting process if necessary.

“It’s unreasonable to continue manual counting just because Chhatra Dal, which boycotted the election, requested it,” he said.

Earlier, Prof Sultana Akhter, Returning Officer for Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, protested against the manual counting of votes instead of using the OMR system.

“We have endured inhumane workloads for the past two days without sleep. One of our colleagues has already collapsed. At this pace, counting the remaining ballots could take another three days. We no longer want to continue manual counting,” she said.

Meanwhile, JUCSU vote counting has resumed manually, confirmed Chief Election Commissioner Prof Md Moniruzzaman.
