Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) chief organiser for northern region, Sarjis Alam, on Tuesday issued a stern warning to some interim government advisers, saying those who perform duties half-heartedly and seek an easy exit through the forthcoming election will face relentless public accountability.
Speaking to reporters after a coordination meeting of NCP district and upazila units in Naogaon, Sarjis said advisers who treat the post-uprising government lightly are betraying the memory of martyrs and will not escape scrutiny.
“They are standing on the blood of countless martyrs. If they act this way, they will not be able to face the people of this country,” he said, adding that for such advisers “there is no safe exit other than death,” a remark he used to underscore the gravity of public judgment.
Sarjis also accused the Election Commission of attempting to grant registration to a party he described as a front organisation.
He alleged the commission is “desperately trying” to register the Bangladesh National League, which he said lacks any real grassroots presence. “If this is an attempt to rehabilitate the Awami League in a new form, neither the people nor the NCP will accept it,” he warned.
On the question of electoral symbols, Sarjis said there is no legal barrier preventing the NCP from using the Shapla (water lily) emblem, but he criticised what he called arbitrary or pressured behaviour by the Election Commission during the sensitive post-uprising period.
“We hope the commission will uphold its independence and act with integrity,” he added.
