The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has welcomed the death sentence handed down to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity and called for the accountability of the entire Awami League.

Speaking at a press conference held at the NCP central office on Monday afternoon, Nahid said that the verdict must be implemented immediately and urged that Hasina be brought back from Delhi to Bangladesh for execution of the sentence.

“We have learned that the interim government’s security advisor is going to India. We hope he will return Sheikh Hasina with him. She must be brought home and executed within a month,” he said.

Nahid emphasized that not only Sheikh Hasina but also former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, along with all members of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and those involved in crimes under the fascist regime, must face justice.

He further stated that verdicts of imprisoned accused must also be expedited. “This is not just a political demand; it is the demand of the victims of the July–August uprising,” he said, adding that judicial proceedings must continue even after elections and cannot be delayed.

Pointing to the role of the Awami League, Nahid said, “The verdict has made it clear that Sheikh Hasina was the planner and executor of genocide as Prime Minister. Therefore, the party itself must also be held accountable for crimes against humanity.”

Referring to the July uprising, he recalled that following the killing of Abu Saeed on July 16, NCP members had vowed to pursue justice. “The trials of thousands of martyrs and injured from the July revolution are now moving rapidly,” he said.

Nahid concluded, “This verdict will be a milestone in Bangladesh’s judicial history. We will only be satisfied when the sentence is implemented. Only then will the souls of the martyrs find peace.”

Earlier on Monday, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death, along with former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified against them, was sentenced to five years in prison. The verdict was delivered by a three-member bench led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder.
