Bangladesh climbed three places in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, released on Thursday, following their 2-2 draw against Nepal and a 1-0 victory over India – a combined boost that has propelled the team to 180 – their best position in nine years.

The men in red and green now have 911 points, gaining 17 points from their previous tally of 894.

Bangladesh’s last better ranking came in May 2016, when they were placed 178th. A month later, they slipped to 181 and continued to fall, dropping as low as 197 at one stage. In recent years, the team has largely hovered between 183 and 187, making this jump a significant turnaround.

India, who were 47 spots ahead of Bangladesh before the Asian Cup Qualifier in Dhaka, suffered a blow after their defeat. They dropped six places from 136th to 142nd in the updated rankings.

In global standings, Brazil climbed to fifth, pushing Portugal and the Netherlands down a spot each to sixth and seventh respectively. Germany and Croatia rose one place apiece, moving into ninth and tenth positions. Brazil’s rise follows a win over Cameroon and a draw against Tunisia.

Spain continue to lead the world rankings, with Argentina, France and England holding their previous positions from second to fourth, respectively.
