Oil tanker catches fire in Karnaphuli; 2 die

Chattogram Bureau ##  An oil tanker caught fire while unloading at a private jetty in the River Karnaphuli in Chattogram on Thursday morning, leaving two workers dead.

Three more persons received burn injuries in the fire that originated in ‘MT Irabati-1’at Super Petrochemical Jetty.

Chattogram Port officials said the tanker carrying 1,200 tons of good from Ashuganj anchored the jetty in the morning.

The tanker’s engine room exploded and it caught fire around 6:30am while unloading the condensate

On information, three rescue vessels- one from the port and two from the Navy- and two fire fighting units from Korean EPZ rushed to the scene and put out the flame after two hours of hectic efforts.

Later, two bodies were recovered and three rescued alive from the tanker.

Injured Abu Sufian,47, Sahabuddin,60, and Monir Hossain,34, were rushed to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Hospital sources said the condition of Abu Sufian and Sahabuddin was critical.
