Speedboat driver arrest; 8 victims identified

Staff Reporter ## Twenty-six people were killed in a collision between a bulkhead cargo and a speedboat in the Padma River in Shibchar of Madaripur on Monday.

Five injured including speedboat driver Shah Alam were admitted to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex. Police have detained Shah Alam.

Meanwhile, police confirmed the identities of eight victims till 2.30pm.

They are: Arju Sardar,40, of Maigro in Alfadanga of Faridpur, and his 18-month old son Yamin, Taher Meer,30, of Rajoir in Madaripur, Kawsar Hossain,40, and Ruhul Amin,25, of Daudkandi in Cumilla, Ziaur Rahman,28, od Isubpur in Titash upazila, Sagar Sheikh,37, of satpar in Munshiganj, and Jhony Adhikari,26, of Bhandaria in Pirojpur.

The bodies were handed over to the relatives.

Banglabazar Ferryghat’s traffic police’s inspector Ashiqur Rahman said a passenger carrying speedboat sailed from Munshiganj’s Shimulia around 6:45am for Banglabazar ferryghat in Shibchar.

Suddenly, the speedboat sank in the river after being hit by the sand-laden bulkhead.

On information, fire service divers from Shibchar and Jajira fire stations rushed to the spot and recovered 24 bodies.

They also rescued six persons alive and whisked them off to local hospital where two persons died.
