“Debate is going on among political parties over this issue. I do not want to take part in that debate. If the law is amended, then it will be possible. Otherwise, the Election Commission cannot go beyond the Constitution,” the CEC said on Saturday while addressing election officials in Rajshahi during a views-exchange meeting at the Regional Public Administration Training Centre.
Nasir Uddin confirmed that preparations are progressing to hold the upcoming parliamentary elections in February, ahead of Ramadan. He warned against attempts to manipulate the polls, saying those who try to capture ballot boxes will face tough action. “If any polling centre is occupied, the entire polling of that centre will be cancelled,” he stated.
The CEC also revealed that the commission is working to deploy the army as part of the law enforcement strategy during the elections.
Asked about possible government pressure, Nasir Uddin said the commission has not faced any interference so far. “If pressure comes, I will resign. I will not remain in this chair,” he declared.
On the political landscape, the CEC noted that the Awami League has no active political activities at the moment as its leadership is facing trial. “During trial proceedings, Awami League leaders cannot participate in elections. Let us see what happens in the verdict,” he remarked.
He further said the Election Commission has about 5,700 officials with prior election experience. However, those found responsible for irregularities in previous polls will not be retained.
During the meeting, Nasir Uddin gave detailed instructions to regional election officers, stressing that the commission’s focus is on ensuring a fair, credible and transparent vote.
