Experts stress academia-industry collaboration for pharmacy industry growth

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on Wednesday hosted a seminar titled “Think Health, Think Pharmacists” to mark World Pharmacists Day 2025, organised by the Department of Pharmacy, IUB and IUB Pharma Club.

Professor SMA Faiz, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), attended as chief guest, adding Bangladesh’s pharmacy industry cannot progress without strong collaboration between academia and industry.

Keynote speaker Md Nasser Shahrear Zahedee, chairman of Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd, addressed students that pharmacy is not just about a job but a responsibility to serve the nation and its people.

Muhammad Mahbubul Haq, secretary of the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh, proposed introducing an updated B.Pharm syllabus in all universities from October. He also stressed the importance of separating the roles of doctors and pharmacists in the country.

Md Shah Imran, professor at the Department of Pharmacy, IUB, demanded a central admission test for pharmacy students similar to medical students and placed five other proposals.

Chair of the seminar, IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof M Tamim, said, “When we think of the health sector, we usually think about doctors and nurses, but not pharmacists. That is why this year our theme is ‘Think Health, Think Pharmacists.’”

Prof Md Selim Reza, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Dhaka University, discussed the modern model and concept of pharmacies.

Speakers highlighted that Bangladeshi medicines are now exported to more than 150 countries. They said the industry is maintaining quality, expanding globally and focusing on proper preservation of medicines.

Also present were Husne Ara Ali, vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees, IUB, Mr Didar A Husain, chairman of the Board of Trustees, IUB, Kamran Ul Baset, dean of the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, IUB, along with faculty members and students.
