Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has slammed those who are introducing new demands to prolong the election process, saying they are “living in a fools’ paradise.”

He made the remarks on Sunday while addressing a rally organized by Nationalist Writers Forum in front of National Press Club.

He said, “Some groups feel they have no future if elections take place. Therefore, they use catchy slogans and raise new demands to delay the election. But those who do this are simply living in fools’ paradise.”

Dudu stressed that a credible election must take place soon in Bangladesh to form a representative parliament and government.
There is no acceptable alternative to power transfer other than elections in this country,” he added.

He further said, “We believe that the future belongs to nationalism. There is no alternative to nationalism for this country. The people of Bangladesh have struggled for 16 years to reclaim their rights and the only way to restore those rights is through elections. If anyone has a different opinion, let’s see who is truly popular through the election.”

He also said, “We have supported the government on the question of democracy. We stood by the government for a free and fair election. Now we expect the government to complete all necessary preparations within a short time and organize an acceptable election.”

Issuing a warning, he said, “If anyone thinks they can impose anything on the people without elections, it will never be accepted. In democracy, the people’s opinion is final.”

Dudu also dismissed fears about foreign interference, saying, “If anyone thinks a neighbouring country will occupy Bangladesh, such ideas are only fantasies like those of Sheikh Hasina. Bangladeshis are a brave nation. They have never bowed their heads to anyone and no one can humiliate this nation.”

He added, “Some dark forces abroad want to create unrest and chaos in Bangladesh. They may carry out isolated terrorist activities to threaten democracy again. Everyone must remain vigilant.”

Criticizing Sheikh Hasina, Dudu said, “The ruthless and terrifying rule Sheikh Hasina has imposed for 16 years has shattered the people. At one time, she forcefully came to power and made insulting remarks about Begum Zia. Today, where she is (in India), like a servant; this is time’s revenge and her true consequence.”

The rally, presided over by Nationalist Writers Forum President Poet Shaheen Reza, also featured speeches by BNP Chairperson’s adviser and Bir Muktijoddha Abdus Salam, executive committee member Mainul Islam and other forum leaders.
