A memorial honoring the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising will be constructed at Osmani Udyan in Dhaka at a cost of Tk 46.4 crore.

On Sunday, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, laid the foundation stone of the memorial. The project is being implemented by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) with funding from the Local Government Division.

The memorial will feature a circular pedestal with eight rectangular columns on the sides and a central cylindrical column reaching 90 feet in height. Two entrances with epitaphs will lead into the site, which will also be landscaped with large Krishnochura flowering trees.

Adviser Bhuiya said, “The memorial’s design and construction give utmost importance to honoring the martyrs and the history of the July Mass Uprising.” He noted that criticism over the budget is politically motivated, as previous autocratic regimes built monuments costing even 300–400 crore taka without such scrutiny.

DSCC Administrator Md. Shahjahan Mia highlighted that the city corporation undertook the project under the adviser’s guidance to preserve the legacy of the uprising. Piling work on the memorial is nearly complete, and construction is expected to finish by December.

The inauguration included prayers for the martyrs and the planting of a medicinal tree. Senior officials from the Local Government Division and DSCC were present at the ceremony.
