The government has officially declared the Bhhomra land customs station in Satkhira—one of the key international trade hubs in the southwest—as a full-fledged Customs House. The decision came through an official circular issued by the Ministry of Finance, granting Bhhomra a new status within Bangladesh’s customs administration framework.

Business leaders and importers hailed the move, saying it will inject fresh momentum into the region’s import-export trade and significantly boost national revenue collection.

The Bhhomra Customs Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) Agents Association described the government’s decision as a “historic milestone.”

In a joint statement, association president Md. Abu Hasan and general secretary Md. Abu Musha said, “With the Finance Ministry and National Board of Revenue (NBR) officially declaring Bhhomra as a Customs House, trade and business opportunities in this region will expand manifold.”

They welcomed the government’s timely and visionary step, noting that Bhhomra’s proximity to Kolkata—India’s major commercial hub—gives it a distinct geographical advantage over other land ports. “Bhhomra is now set to become one of the busiest land ports in the country, they added.

The leaders also said that the upgrade to a Customs House will enhance administrative efficiency, expand manpower and infrastructure, and open new employment opportunities — fulfilling a long-cherished demand of the business community.

The association expressed deep gratitude to the concerned ministries, the NBR, the Customs Department, and local administration officials for their efforts. They also voiced optimism that if this initiative continues, Bhhomra Customs House will soon emerge as the leading trade center in the southwest and play a vital role in the nation’s revenue growth.

Currently, various goods including food items, construction materials, garments, and cosmetics are imported from India through Bhhomra, while Bangladesh exports agricultural produce, fish, and industrial products via the port.

With its new Customs House status, Bhhomra will now host full-fledged revenue administration, customs valuation, import-export documentation, and trade management operations locally. This is expected to reduce time, costs, and bureaucratic hurdles — offering major relief to traders.

Local businesspeople, officials, and residents have welcomed the decision, expressing hope that this move will not only transform Bhhomra port but also reshape the economic landscape of the entire southwestern region.
