Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) First Vice President Salim Rahman said that the ready-made garment sector has been developed as the safest and most responsible manufacturing sector in the world.
The factories in this sector provide the most safety to protect the lives of workers at workplace, he said.
“Not only production, but fire and building safety are the mainstay of sustainable development of the garment industry. There is no alternative to maintaining fire safety and compliance in all factories,” the BGMEA leader stated.
He said these at the first meeting of the standing committee on Fire and Safety held at BGMEA building in the city on Sunday. The committee Chairman Raihan Shams presided over the meeting.
Salim in his speech also emphasised on simplifying fire safety plans and fire license renewals, and owners’ constant precautions to prevent fire accidents.
BGMEA Director and the committee Director-in-Charge Rakibul Alam Chowdhury said that when a factory catches fire, the owners face various complications even after facing damages.
“The affected owners also have to suffer from complications with the Fire Service department, customs bonds, insurance and banking. If the institutions including customs bonds had shown sincerity in resolving these complications, the affected owners could have benefited at least to some extent,” Rakibul added.
The speakers discussed in detail about obstacles to fire license renewal, increasing the number of engineering firms for the preparation of fire safety plans, training programmes, integrated initiatives to prevent accidents, ensuring building’s structural and electrical safety, and Fire Service department, customs-bond and insurance related problems at the meeting.
Director MDM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Md Saifullah Mansur, Enamul Aziz Chowdhury, Co-Chairman of the standing committee Taslim Arif, and other BGMEA high official attended the meeting.
