China firmly denied conducting any nuclear weapons tests on Monday, responding to recent allegations by former U.S. President Donald Trump that Beijing had carried out secret nuclear tests unknown to the public.

“China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development, maintained a no-first-use nuclear policy, and upheld a self-defense-oriented nuclear strategy,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing. “We remain committed to our moratorium on nuclear testing and have strictly abided by it.”

China has observed a nuclear testing moratorium since 1996, when it signed—though has not yet ratified—the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). International monitoring systems have not detected any confirmed nuclear tests by China in recent decades.
