Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Parwar has cautioned that yielding to political pressure on the July National Charter referendum could jeopardize the upcoming national elections.
Speaking at an election rally in Khulna’s Fultala upazila on Friday evening, Parwar urged the government to immediately implement the Charter and announce the referendum date.
Apart from BNP, several other political parties have submitted notes of dissent. The National Consensus Commission’s proposals for the referendum, based on the July Charter, must now be finalized without including any further dissent. This has become a public demand,” he said.
Parwar emphasized his party’s support for dialogue among political parties to address the ongoing political crisis. “Jamaat-e-Islami has long advocated for all-party talks, including BNP, to reach a consensus. The government should act as a mediator, and our party is ready to fully cooperate,” he added.
Highlighting the urgency, he stressed that the referendum schedule must be announced before the declaration of the national election timetable. “Those who signed the July Charter should now uphold the agreed reforms. Introducing new dissent or opposing settled issues is unjustified and contrary to national interest,” Parwar noted.
He also confirmed Jamaat-e-Islami’s readiness to participate in the national elections slated for February 2026, provided a fair and level playing field is ensured.
The rally was presided over by Jamaat leader Syed Abu Zafar, with district secretary Munshi Mizanur Rahman, assistant secretary Gausul Azam Hadi, district executive council member Sheikh Sirajul Islam, advocate Abu Yusuf Molla, Fultala upazila Ameer Maulana Abdul Alim Molla, upazila secretary Maulana Saiful Hasan, and district Labour Welfare Federation vice-president Ali Akbar Morol among the speakers.
Later, Parwar addressed a second rally at Moshiari Southpara under Atra-Gilatala Union in the same upazila, reiterating his call for timely implementation of the July Charter reforms.
