India is currently assessing Bangladesh’s request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since fleeing the country in August 2024 amid July uprising.

Speaking on Wednesday, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Dhaka’s request is under formal review.

The spokesperson said the matter is being evaluated through India’s internal judicial and legal procedures, but did not provide a timeline for any decision.

Bangladesh first sought Hasina’s extradition in December and renewed the appeal earlier this month after she was handed a death sentence for her alleged role in last year’s deadly crackdown on student demonstrators.

Hasina, who was ousted from power during July mass uprising, remains a central figure in the ongoing political and legal developments between the two neighbouring countries.
